Knowledge
alone may be insufficient to effect behaviour change. Key features which contribute to the success and impact of Bridges of Hope activities and behaviour change techniques include: 1. A broad and holistic approach As soon as we scrape the surface of the subject of HIV and AIDS, it quickly opens up an array of issues touching all fundamental aspects of life - love, relationships, sex, gender, culture, reproduction, religion, politics and economics. It cannot possibly be addressed effectively as a purely 'health' issue. Bridges of Hope is therefore broad and holistic in its approach. Issues around HIV and AIDS are explored and addressed within a framework and context of 'how to stay healthy, improve relationships, living longer and achieve your goals and dreams in life.' 2. Positive outcome focus As well as 'fighting against' HIV, AIDS and stigma, we need clarity and focus on what axactly we are 'fighting for'. Particularly for long-term maintainance of behaviours (such as practicing safer sex), decisions need to be linked not just to avoiding the danger, but to achieving what we each most want and value - our personal goals and dreams. In terms of the Walking the Bridges metaphor, this is our 'future island'. 3. Participatory, experiential learning Bridges of Hope engages participants in a highly participatory, engaging and fun multi-sensory learning process, as illustrated in the video.
Bridges of Hope activities are designed to create clear and memorable learning experiences, which individuals, couples, families and communities can apply practically to address their issues around HIV prevention, care, support, testing, treatment and positive living. |
