Career History

HIV/AIDS Training Consultant  (April 2000 - current)

  • Established the Training Consultancy Potential Unlimited (International) to develop and promote 'New Tools for Change in HIV/AIDS Education', incorporating some powerful and practical NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) behaviour change techniques and concepts into participatory tools to enhance the impact of HIV/AIDS programmes.  Developed and adapted the Journey of Hope and Bridges of Hope packages, now being used in many countries worldwide with a diverse spectrum of target groups:

  • Developed the Bridges of Hope HIV/AIDS training package for Standard Chartered Bank and facilitated the 'Living with HIV' regional conference for their champions (peer educators) drawn from all 13 African countries they operate in.   Developed and adapted these materials and trained champions at other regional conferences in Malaysia, India, Hong Kong and UK to roll out this program globally for their 21,000 staff in 56 countries worldwide.  This programme won the Global Business Coalition on HIV/AIDS 2003 Workplace Award for Business Excellence.

  • Worked with Johns Hopkins University / Center for Communication Programs on a USAID/UNAIDS funded program to develop and customize Journey of Hope for Ghana's national "Stop Aids Love Life" HIV/AIDS awareness and behaviour change campaign. Lead trainer for three 8-day workshops to train 80 Master Trainers from a spectrum of NGOs and public sector bodies throughout Ghana.  Journey of Hope was launched nationally by Vice-President Alhaji Aliu Mahama and 2000 sets of materials have been made to support the downstream training of trainers program.

  • Facilitated a conference for VSO Ghana and worked with stakeholders to develop their country HIV/AIDS policy and strategy.

  • Work in collaboration with KANCO (Kenya AIDS NGOs Consortium) included training and coaching those in member organizations in the effective application of some Journey of Hope tools and techniques. e.g. Goal Ireland now using them in their HIV/AIDS programs targeting street children; SourceNet 2000 using them with commercial sex workers and their clients; MSF Spain using them with rural communities.  

  • Helped develop materials and train 60 senior Telkom Kenya staff to run HIV/AIDS workshops for all 18,000 employees.

  • Trained PSI Botswana staff and Interpersonal Communicators to use and train others to use Bridges of Hope tools and techniques.

  • Trained Standard Bank and Stanbic Bank HIV Champions (staff peer educators) from 10 African countries to use and train others to use the Bridges of Hope materials and techniques.

  • Contracted by Barclays Africa to further develop and adapt the Bridges of Hope package and run a series of Training of Trainers programmes in different African countries.

  • Established and facilitating a support group for people living with HIV in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe.

  • Facilitated a 3-day Behaviour Change Skills Building workshop with Bridges of Hope materials for participants from 18 HIV/AIDS service organizations in Livingstone District, Zambia.

Training Officer, VSO (Voluntary Services Overseas), London
(July 1996 - March 2000)
Responsible for the training and preparation of all VSO volunteers going to work in Business and Social Development placements in over 50 countries.  This involved selecting, assessing against national training standards and managing a team of external trainers throughout the design, development, delivery, monitoring and evaluation of a range of skills development and cultural adaptation courses.  It also involved establishing HIV/AIDS awareness training for volunteers.

Small Business Adviser, Lobster Security cc, Durban, South Africa
(Aug - Dec 1995)
Managed the development of a new product range, piloted it in Durban and then saw through its launch nationally and the training of local staff to continue its management.   Eight years on, this continues as a major sector of the business.

Business Development Executive, Wiltshire Training and Enterprise Council (March 1994 - June 1995)
Responsible for introducing and managing the delivery of a broad range of training and development services to organisations in and around Swindon, UK.  These focused on improving performance through effective training and development of employees, often within the framework of the Investors in People national standard.

Teamworking Course Director / Coach, The Coverdale Organisation  (September 1993 -February 1994) 
Recruited and trained to run 5 day Teamworking courses using Coverdale's inductive training methodology.  Subsequently delivered these courses for VSO and CAFOD staff in UK, Lao and Ghana.  

VSO Volunteer - Project Manager, Kasapa Brickfield, Chililabombwe, Zambia (September 1989 - June 1993)
Responsible for all aspects of the redevelopment of a burnt clay brick manufacturing enterprise, working closely with Zambian colleagues to take it from dormant dilapidation to a profitable, self-sustaining enterprise employing 90 people.  Training included HIV/AIDS awareness and prevention.

  • TDLB (Training & Development Lead Body) D32 Skills Assessor for assessing trainers against UK National Standards
  • Masters Degree in Engineering and Management at Birmingham University (M.Eng & Man).  This included courses in personnel management, social psychology, marketing, small business development / entrepreneurship, and financial management.
  • Open University Masters Degree in Development Management  (part completed)
